Continuing our Mindful Gaming series! This week, I've got Gerry with me to discuss how to get better immersion in your games by managing your ego and being intentional about your feelings. We talk about what immersion is, why its important, not being too precious about your creations, sharing enough information with PCs to make context-appropriate decisions, and how to figure out when your ego is getting in the way of you having a good time and maybe what you can do about it.
Gerry also shared the following: "In the many times self-examination, mindfulness, and intentionality are referenced in this chat- the last thing I want to imply or suggest is that this stuff is easy or that it came naturally to me. When I speak of "mindfulness" I am speaking about a very specific practice of meditation and self-reflection. To many (my past self included) this kind of talk may seem very 'wu wu' but to anyone interested in learning more, a very good point of entry into these practices is Dan Harris. Author of 10% Happier and founder of a free meditation app of the same name. He is funny, straight forward and no nonsense. Here is a link to his very amusing and informative TED Talk" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuhIzO57HVk

To paraphrase one of the great poets of our time, Cindy Lauper, we all just wanna have fun. But is kicking down a door to fight baddies fun, or is reading a letter from your childhood love fun, or ... shocker.. BOTH! Turns out there are lots of ways we have fun and find joy and connect with each other and the games we play. -

Swords without Masters is probably one of my favourite games to run - the Tones mechanic is one of the best things I've come across to make my overall descriptions better for all games I play.

Safety tools aren’t this mythical thing. They are tools meant to facilitate easier communication around heavy topics. They are not there to restrict/censor games, but instead, make sure that you can explore heavier topics (which most players WANT to do) in a way that's still enjoyable and fun. It's no fun when it happens at someone's expense. I also want to share some personal stories so that you can see specifically what I’m referring to when I say 'communication'.

Hello there! I started getting into tabletops in 2019 and have been doing some kind of content creation as a creative outlet for a little while. My blogging days started with a Xanga.. before LiveJournal…
I love writing but I never know what to write about. Enter tabletops. There is so much to learn and so much to engage with! It’s social, but there is a big element of individual engagement if you want! It’s the perfect hobby for me!
The learning-based format of my content was inspired by my desire to ask a billion questions to anyone and everyone who was willing to answer them, and knowing that I am far, far from an expert. I am very intentionally putting myself in positions of learning and am getting a LOT out of it! I find this approach also lets me feel like I’m pulling a bit of life into rules on a page and dice rolls - and what is this glorious pasttime if not driven by life!
An I’m-still-learning-format is fairly unusual for the tabletop content creation space, but I hope it makes the whole thing feel more approachable and accessible.
